The Adult Career and Technical classes are offered through the Career Center at Ben Davis High School. They are provided as an opportunity to learn new skills and knowledge for your personal satisfaction. The classes provide opportunities for self improvement. Enrollment is done at the Career Center. The classes are taught by qualified teachers and/or persons working in the industry. In most classes you will not take tests, have mandatory homework or attendance, or receive grades. You will receive a certificate of participation upon completion of the class. The cost of enrollment includes your book and/or supplies which you get to keep. If a class does not receive enough enrollments, it may be postponed or in some cases cancelled. Payment is expected at the time of enrollment. If a class is cancelled, all enrollment fees will be returned.
Descriptions of the Adult Career and Technical Classes
Conversational Spanish I
This is a “basic” course for those who have never been exposed to the Spanish Language, but it is also for those who need to brush up on their skills. This course will provide you with practical tips and the tools necessary to rapidly learn correct pronunciation. It will also provide grammar basics, including special sounds and letters. The instructor will provide you with cultural background that will help you understand the Hispanic community. This course uses idioms and expressions most commonly used by native Spanish speakers, and then teach you how to pronounce them correctly though the use of “phonetic translations”. This course has been primarily designed to build your confidence and not bog you down with hard and fast grammar rules. This class is perfect for those wanting to acquire enough Spanish to meet their needs at work, business, or vacations.
Heating & Air Conditioning I
We are please to announce that our Heating and Air Class in now part of the York’s Quality Education and Training Program. The entire program was created by construction industry experts and educators. It includes standardized, competency-based curricula with measurable objectives. York’s Quality Education & Training HVAC curriculum includes four levels. This class will enable you to complete Level One. Level One will introduce you to installation and service requirements for residential and commercial heating and cooling systems, both forced-air and hydronic. Upon completion of this Level One course, you will be able to start at Level Two at York’s Quality Education and Training Center. Credentials earned through this program are maintained within the NCCER’s (National Center for Construction Education and Research) guidelines. The NCCER has created a National Registry that provides recognized industry credentials that will be beneficial in seeking employment or furthering your education in your current job.

Introduction to Microcomputers
This is an excellent class for the beginning computer student. Students will be introduced to the basics of operating a computer. The lessons will focus on the Microsoft Office Suite Software. Students will have introductory lessons on each of the following programs: Microsoft Word (word processing), Excel (spreadsheets), Access (database) & PowerPoint (presentation graphics). Most of the class is hands-on as the instructor guides you through each lesson.
Microsoft Word
Microsoft Word is a word processing application that will enable you to prepare letters, reports, memos, invoices, and newsletters. This introductory class will help students create, edit and proof documents while learning to navigate through tool bars, menus and dialog boxes and their functions. Students will learn the basics of working in a document such as entering, selecting, inserting, moving and deleting text. They will be able to create different types of documents such as letters, envelopes, reports, and tables. Students will learn to enhance documents by using bullets, numbers, borders, different styles and headings, and other features.
Access
Access is a relational database application that you can use on its own or as part of the Microsoft Office Suite. Access is used to keep track of data such as address lists, customers, orders, inventory, employees or any other kind of information you want to organize. This course will teach students how to create a database, work with tables, create simple queries and forms, filter records, and generate reports. If you use Access with the other Microsoft Office applications, you can import data or graphics from those applications in your Access databases. This is a hands-on introductory class.
Excel
Excel is a spreadsheet program and part of the Microsoft Office Suite of applications. Students learn that a spreadsheet is a grid in which you can enter, calculate, and manage data. The Excel program makes it easy to manage numeric information, to create charts, and to maintain data lists. In this class individuals learn how to build and format spreadsheets working with databases, charts, formulas, and functions.
PowerPoint
Students will learn in PowerPoint how to create a computerized slideshow presentation. Each presentation consists of a number of slides. The students will learn how to enhance their presentations by adding charts, graphs, drawings, text, animation and graphics. Besides creating electronic presentations, this class will show you how to prepare presentation handouts, speaker’s notes, 35mm slides, and overheads.
