GED Testing
The GED® Test offers adults who left school an opportunity to earn a high school credential. GED examinees must demonstrate major skills (twelfth grade competencies that would have been acquired in a four year high school education) in a battery of tests covering five major subject areas.
Am I eligible to take the GED Test?
If you meet all of the following qualifications, you may take the test:
- You have lived in Indiana a minimum of 30 days immediately preceding the testing.
- You have NOT earned a high school diploma from an accredited United States high school.
- You are at least 17 years of age. (17 year-olds must provide additional documentation of an Indiana exit interview showing withdrawal from school, Passing GED practice test scores, parent/guardian signatures, and school superintendent signature.
How may I prepare to take the test?
You may wish to enroll in an Adult Basic Education Program, which provides free classes for adults who have not earned a high school diploma. For class information call 317-988-7975 or visit the Adult Basic Education Program. It is not mandatory to take classes. You may wish to prepare on your own. Many self-study books for the GED are available in bookstores and libraries.
How much does it cost to take the test?
The GED Test cost $70. The cost covers all five sub-tests. The cost to take one or more individual sub-tests is $14 per sub-test. The payment must be paid in CASH at the time of registration.
How do I sign up?
You must come to the GED office in person to fill out the application and select a testing time. Or you can print the form off and bring the form to the GED office filled out. At the time of registration you must provide 3 pieces of I.D. One of them MUST be your Indiana driver’s license photo I.D. or state-issued photo I.D. The other two pieces of identification can be a Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, Insurance I.D. Card, Employer I.D. card, etc. If you are 17 years of age, you must also bring additional documentation. You will be required to provide a copy of a passing Pre-GED test, an Exit Interview from your last school and a school superintendent signature. You must also have a parent or guardian with you to co-sign the application.
How long is the test?
More than seven hours are needed to complete the five tests. It is given over a two-day period. We have day-time testing and evening testing. After the tests are completed it takes approximately 2 weeks to get your results.

What scores do I need to pass?
You must score at least 410 points on each individual sub-test out of 800 possible and have at least 2250 total points to average 450 for the whole test.
What if I fail the GED Test?
You may retest as many times as needed to pass. There is no waiting period. However, you are limited to 3 testings in a calendar year.
Do I get a high school diploma if I pass the GED Test?
No, if you pass, you will be eligible to receive a GED High School Equivalency
Certificate issued by the state of Indiana.

When are the testing dates?
We have testing all year round. Test dates are normally scheduled on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, three weeks per month. Testing may be completed during two evening sessions (4:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.) or two day sessions (9:00 a.m.-2:00 a.m.). At the time of registration you can select a testing date that will meet your needs. There is limited seating in each testing. You cannot reserve a time until you register, show proper I.D. and pay for the test.
