Wayne Township Special Services Early Childhood Milestones

There are general ages at which children should have mastered certain skills. The following may help determine if your child could benefit from a referral for evaluation and possible intervention services:

2 years of age Kicks a large ball Recognizes familiar pictures in books Turns page of a book independently Asks for things by name Starts putting two words together	3 years of age Walks up and down stairs Responds to directions and begins to ask questions Completes simple puzzles Scribbles with crayons Feeds self Asks to use the potty Can play alone for longer periods of time Speech is understandable about 80-85% of the time
4 years of age Rides a tricycle Identify (point to) colors/simple shapes Knows full name and age Plays with other children Answers simple questions Use 4-5 word sentences	5 years of age Can carry on a conversation Prints a few letters Recognizes own printed name Colors within lines Counts 10 objects Plays cooperative games Speech is understandable 90% or more of the time

If you have concerns about your child’s development or think your child has not mastered the early childhood milestones, an assessment can be provided. If you think your child should be evaluated to determine if he/she needs intervention services including special education, please call Jody Harvey, Preschool Secretary, at 988-7900. A referral packet will be sent to you. Upon receipt of the completed packet, an assessment will occur and a meeting will be held with you to discuss the results and recommendations.
