Facility
Occupied in 1955, the building sits on 15 acres of land. Technology is integrated throughout the building as well as in our computer lab. A lovely outdoor classroom/courtyard provides many learning experiences for all grade levels. The school underwent a complete renovation which was completed in the of Fall 1999.
Visitors
All visitors are asked to enter through the front door and report to the office. Visitors must sign in and receive a guest pass to go beyond the reception area. Parents are always welcome at Westlake School and may visit at any time; however, an appointment should always be made with the teacher before visiting the classroom. In this way, we are not disrupting the classroom schedule.
Absences / Attendance
If your child is absent from school, please call the 24 Hour Attendance Line at 988-6950 before 10 a.m. Homework requests need to be made at this time. If contact is not made between the school and the parent, your child will automatically receive an unexcused absence for that day. Absences are classified as excused for three reasons only.
Tardy Students
Students are to be in their classroom when the bell rings at 8:00 a.m., otherwise they are tardy. If a student is tardy, an adult must accompany him/her to the office. Students who do not ride the bus need to understand that weather, traffic, car problems, etc., are not excuses to be tardy.
Student Drop-Off / Pick-Up
Student drop-off begins at 7:45 a.m. and student pick-up begins at 2:25 p.m. in the south parking lot. Do not drop students off early.
Report Cards
Report cards are issued every nine weeks in Wayne Township. Performance Reports are issued in the middle of each grading period to those students needing improvements or showing significant positive or negative change.
Items Brought To School
We follow the Board of Health recommendation that homemade treats may not be passed out at school. Only store-purchased treats may be given.
Cell phones, beepers, electronic games, toys, and other items such as these may not be brought to school. If they are found, they will be given to the principal and a parent must come in and pick them up. A second instance may result in the item being taken permanently. If you send flowers, balloon bouquets, etc., to your child, they may not take them home on the bus. Someone will need to pick them up.
At the end of each nine weeks, any unclaimed lost and found items be discarded.
All unclaimed items will be discarded one week after withdrawal or one week after the last day of school.
Custody
Wayne Township Board Policy states: Both custodial and non-custodial parents have a right to visit at school and remove a student from school unless the custodial parent provides the Principal of the student's school with a court order that specifically addresses the time and place of visitation by the non-custodial parent. When a custodial parent produces such an order, the School District will not permit the non-custodial parent to visit the student at school until the non-custodial parent produces a more recent order of the same court permitting visitation at school. By adoption of this policy, the Board of Education does not guarantee that it will verify that a student rides the proper school bus or will only be released to the custodial parent.
Busses
Riding the bus to school is a privilege - not a right. That privilege is extended to all children who cooperate with the school bus drivers and may be revoked for lack of cooperation. If your child needs to ride a bus other than his/her regularly assigned bus, please send a note to the teacher and bus driver. The office will issue a bus pass.
Recess
Recess is a vital part of each child's school day. Weather permitting, at 32° & above, our children go outdoors for recess every day. If for some reason your child should NOT go outdoors for an extended period of time (3 or more consecutive days), please send a note signed by your doctor.
Medication
Medicine, including aspirin, cannot be brought to school or administered by the school without a signed medication form. Students who need to take prescribed medication must have an appropriate note signed by the physician and parent before the medication can be brought to school. All medicine must be in the original container. Indiana law prohibits the school from sending medication home with a student of elementary age without written permission from parent / guardian.
Cell Phones
Cell phones should not be brought to school.
Early Dismissals
If your child needs to leave school early, please send a note. Students will be called down after their parent arrives. A parent must come into the office and sign his/her child out.
Dress Code
Wayne Township is currently revising the dress code. A copy will be given to students the first week of school. In the interest of health, safety, and social acceptance, the Wayne Township elementary schools provide the following guidelines:
- Clothing and attire are to be clean, neat, safe, appropriate, and must not create a distraction to the learning environment.
- Shorts, skirts, and dresses are to be in the mid-thigh to knee-length area and the midriff must be covered.
- No biking or spandex clothes are to be worn.
- Hats and coats must not be worn during the school day.
- Footwear must be worn. Flip-flops are not acceptable.
- Good grooming and personal cleanliness are to be practiced at all times.
- Each school may develop expectations to further specify the above guidelines.

*Note: The grade of F will not be given for midterm reports. If a student’s performance indicates that the student does not yet demonstrate mastery at the 70% level on the appropriate state standards, a grade of I will be given. The grade of I means that specific “intervention” is planned to assist the student in meeting the standards by the end of the grading period. When the grade of I is given, the teacher will list the intervention(s) to be used on the midterm report.
