Section 504

Ensuring Equal Access to Education

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is federal legislation that protects individuals with disabilities against discrimination. This law ensures that students with disabilities have equal access to educational opportunities.

Who Qualifies for Section 504?

A student may qualify under Section 504 if they:

  1. Have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. Major life activities include, but are not limited to learning, reading, concentrating, thinking, communicating, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing.
  2. Have a record of such an impairment
  3. Are regarded as having such an impairment

What is a 504 Plan?

A 504 plan is a formal document that outlines specific accommodations and support services a student needs to fully participate in their education. This plan is created by a team of educators, in collaboration with the student's family.

How to Request a 504 Evaluation

If you believe your child may benefit from a 504 plan:

  1. Contact your school's counselor or administrator
  2. Request a 504 evaluation in writing
  3. Participate in the evaluation process
  4. Work with the 504 team to develop an appropriate plan if your child qualifies
