School Board Seeking Applicants for School Board Vacancy

The M.S.D. of Wayne Township School Board announces a vacancy following the passing of School Board member Mike Nance. 

The Board is now accepting applications from qualified community members interested in serving the remainder of the term, which was set to expire on December 31, 2026. 

Per Indiana Code 20-23-4-30, the remaining school board members must appoint an individual to fill the board vacancy within 30 days by a majority vote. The appointee must live within the boundaries of the M.S.D. of Wayne Township and shall serve the balance of the term of the seat being vacated. The individual appointed must possess the qualifications provided for a regularly elected or appointed governing body member filling the office.

Who Can Apply

To be eligible for appointment, candidates must:

• Be a registered voter in Marion County
• Be at least 18 years of age
• Have legal settlement in the M.S.D. of Wayne Township

What to Submit

Complete applications include:

• Complete the online application and attach the following materials in the appropriate section of the application: 
  • Cover Letter of interest to the Board of Education and Superintendent 
  • Current resume
  • Response to four questions
• Background checks will be conducted on the selected appointee 

Key Dates

Applications are due November 30, 2025.

Following the application deadline, the School Board will hold an executive session to consider applications and identify prospective appointees for further consideration.

In accordance with Indiana's Open Door Law, candidate interviews will be conducted at a public meeting on December 11, 2025, from 5:00-7:30 p.m. at the Education Center, 1220 S. High School Road, and a public vote will be held at the Regular School Board Meeting on December 15, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. at the Education Center, 1220 S. High School Road, to appoint and swear in the new board member. The public is welcome to attend and observe.

Understanding the Process

Indiana Code 20-23-4-30 requires the Board to fill the vacancy within 30 days through appointment rather than special election. Indiana's Open Door Law (IC 5-14-1.5-6.1) requires that interviews of prospective appointees be conducted in public meetings, ensuring transparency in the selection process.

The appointed member will serve until the current term expires on December 31, 2026.
