Stout Field Elementary Celebrates HOSTS Mentor Miss Jean's 100th Birthday

Stout Field Elementary Celebrates HOSTS Mentor Miss Jean's 100th Birthday

Students at Stout Field Elementary recently celebrated an extraordinary milestone—the 100th birthday of Jean Julian, affectionately known as Miss Jean, a dedicated volunteer mentor in the school's HOSTS (Help One Student To Succeed) program.

For just over six years, Miss Jean had dedicated her Tuesday mornings to mentoring on their reading skills. The HOSTS program connects volunteer mentors with third and fourth-grade students for personalized, one-on-one literacy support. During their time together, students read books, recite poetry, play games, and practice vocabulary exercises—all guided by their mentor's patient coaching.

This week's celebration offered students a rare glimpse into history through Miss Jean's eyes. They learned what school, food, and family life were like in 1926, when Miss Jean was born, and eagerly asked questions of their honored guest.

When students asked about her school days, Miss Jean's response revealed the lasting impact of great teachers. "I can see the faces of those teachers today and how much they meant to my life as I grew older," she reflected. She shared vivid memories of walking a mile to school each day and the simple joy of making snow ice cream.

"Ms. Jean always finds the good in everything," said Lisa Kent, HOSTS instructor. "She loves everyone and treats all of the students and mentors like family. Even if a kiddo is having a rough day she always has something positive to say and always encourages them during their time with her."

Miss Jean's dedication to education spans generations. She mentors alongside her daughter, Sherry Williams, and Leslee Newhouse, grandmother to Miss Jean's great-granddaughter on her dad's side. All three women drive to Stout Field Elementary together every Tuesday morning to work with students. Miss Jean's great-granddaughter, Kelsey Newhouse, serves as a third-grade teacher at Stout Field Elementary, continuing the family's legacy of service.

"My family is very blessed to have so many years with my great grandma!" said Kelsey Newhouse. "She is very special and makes everyone around her feel loved and appreciated. We are excited to celebrate her 100th birthday with her!"

The celebration reminded everyone at Stout Field Elementary that learning is a lifelong gift, one that Miss Jean continues to share with each student she mentors.
